Business Plans ? a Sure Cure for Insomnia?

Safer than prescription medication and cheaper then over the counter sleep aids, the average business plan will induce near catatonic conditions within minutes.  The secret lies in a number of very common and highly developed characteristics of business plan writing including the required use of very long and tedious paragraphs, bland meandering sentences and of course no color, no graphics, no headings, no energy, no creativity and most importantly – no focus.

The irony is that very few documents are exposed to the level or intensity of competition that the typical business plan must face.  An average VC firm will review several hundred business plans for every one that they fund and the reality is that most plans don’t make it past the first page.  Given these less than desirable odds, common sense would tell you that progressive thinking plan writers would do something to improve the readability of the plans.  Unfortunately, that is rarely the case.

With a few very minor exceptions, business plans have remained fundamentally unchanged since Gutenberg invented the printing press.  Sure, we’ve added a few new catch phrases like unique selling proposition, value positioning and core competencies, but these are hardly major leaps forward.

Part of the problem may be our over reliance on the “content is king” concept.  Most plan writers assume that the purpose of content is to inform and thus the copy invariably lacks critical elements that compel the reader to do something — anything, including the simple act of reading.  If the first few paragraphs of the plan don’t capture and motivate the reader, nothing short of a loaded pistol is going to help.

Website designers understand this concept very well.  In their world, duration or “stickiness” is king.  Getting someone to the site is only a small part of the challenge. The hard part is keeping them there.  So what makes a Website sticky?  Research points to a number of factors including a mix of good crisp and persuasive copy, focused message points, a pleasant design and effective graphics – all working together.

Cure for Insomnia movie with Depression cured by Music

Obviously, a musical note is going to be much more pleasant to the ear.

What distinguishes music from other sound waves is the manner in which the sound waves vibrate and decrease from loud to soft. This is also the reason why you see the recent trend by large companies to reconstitute classics originally performed by some of the greats of stage and screen.

What is music? Dropping a metal pan on the floor presents jarring, erratic vibrations. Striking a note on a piano chord presents a softer more uniform and smooth transition from loud to soft. All sounds are comprised of sound waves. The experience is so profound that I can remember the feel of the sun on my face, the smell of hot dogs cooked over an open fire and the laughter of friends and family.

There is a theory that certain notes or chords resonate with a vibration that is particularly harmonious to specific people. Have you ever heard a song that gave you “goose bumps?” If so, then you give validation to this theory. When this occurs, the music has a profound affect on the subconscious. Add intense emotion to the equation and you have one powerful, indelible, blueprint on your subconscious that will follow you the rest of your life.

For example, let’s say that you receive news of the death of a loved one while a specific piece of music is playing on the radio.

All of us grew up with certain songs or instrumentals that strike a chord that reverberates through our entire being. For example, when I hear “A Summer Place,” it immediately carries me back to summer months in the fifties. That particular music may have a lasting impression. Years later, for no apparent reason, you may find yourself immediately thrown into a state of depression upon hearing that same tune. The same can be true of “positive” feelings as described in the story above.

The subliminal effect of music is a proven fact. How often do you find yourself humming a fragment of a tune that you can’t identify only to discover that it’s a new “commercial” message you heard on your television. The advertising industry pays huge amounts of money to conduct research into why and how music works on the subconscious mind.

Just for fun, the next time you find yourself humming a tune, try and remember when, where and under what circumstances you heard it for the very first time. The exercise will probably help you to better understand how past events have shaped your musical preferences. And, I’ll wager that the next time you hear “A Summer Place,” you will remember reading this article.

Happy Listening!

There’s an old adage about how “music sooths the savage beast.” Not only is this true, it is actually an understatement. Music plays such a profound part of our lives, that we will barely scratch the surface here, but let’s give it an overview.

Is yoga a cure for insomnia?

There is no point in writing endless complaints that people should not get too worked up about lack of sleep. The pharmaceutical companies have convinced too many millions of people that drugs are the answer when we are “suffering” through insomnia. The fact that some people only need a few hours sleep every night is of no importance when profits amounting to billions of dollars are at stake. We are suffering sleep deprivation if we fail to get eight hours. That is a serious medical problem. Take these pills. And yet, there is this thing called yoga. It is one of these mind and body disciplines coming out of the East. It teaches meditation through physical forms, learning to concentrate and free the mind from external distractions. Given that the most common causes of insomnia include anxiety, stress or depression, the use of relaxation and meditation techniques offers a way in which people can center themselves and become more contented. Once people gain some real control over their emotions as expressed through their life force, this can allow the body to find sleep naturally. Fear of not sleeping often becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy. The stress triggers the release of cortisol, one of the hormones associated with the adrenal gland. This wakes up the body at the wrong time and can stimulate the brain into greater activity. Properly directed, yoga can calm the body and mind, making it easier to sleep. If you cannot get to sleep or wake too early, this does not mean getting out of bed to stand on one leg. Obviously, that would complete the waking process. Since yoga is the mind and body working together in shapes and forms to achieve a meditative state, you should either work through some forms just before your usual bedtime and then, when fully relaxed, get straight into bed. Or you should develop physical forms you can comfortably work through while lying down. The idea is to achieve a relaxed mind through breathing exercises and gentle stretching. The perfect form to study is Yoga Nidra in which a deep relaxation akin to sleep is achieved. In one sense, this use of yoga exploits its underlying emphasis on autosuggestion through which you train your mind to believe in something or to expect certain physical outcomes. Focussing your mind in this way does represent an excellent alternative to the long-term use of sleeping pills like ambien. Modern scientific research accepts the power of the mind to take command of the body and achieve remarkable results. It does not matter whether you are making the cultural adaptation to learn through the repetition of physical movements and forms developed over the centuries as yoga, or you train your mind through the Western practice of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. The aim is the same: to put you in the right frame of mind for sleep to come naturally and to stay for as long as your body needs it. If this proves only to be five or six hours in a night, you have to accept this as perfectly normal. You must not panic and buy ambien online. Simply accept the way in which your body works. Do not try to force it into behavior prescribed by others. You are in command of your body and what it does it right for you.
