Sleep Disorders Affecting Shift Workers

This is a fairly common form of sleeping disorder among medical professionals, police officers, and fireman. This is attributed mostly to people who change their work schedules and sleeping times around frequently. You’ll find this often in college students when they’re changing semesters and quarters when they get new schedules and can sometimes throw sleep patterns off.

Meaning if you were used to getting up early one semester and then you get to sleep late on another it can throw your sleeping patterns off, which can make you feel disoriented and confused which is the main cause for why people get up and retire late, and are late for their jobs and classes because they’re not giving themselves enough time to adjust between schedule changes.

This is why when a job or school schedules changes it’s ideal to give yourself adequate time to make the adjustment so that it doesn’t throw you off physically, so you’re able to wake up and retire at a reasonable time so you can make it to work and school on time.

This is why it’s not always wise to constantly change your schedule if possible because if you do it too much you’re going to confuse yourself on whether you’re coming or going. There are some people who’s jobs switch their schedules around so much that it can throw someone completely out of sync because the hours start to get rather conflicted when they’re coming and going and not making time for other things like having a life or maintaining their priorities outside of their job and school.

This also can happen if you’re running between more than one job and school because if you’re going to a job during the day and then running to another job at night it can throw you off as well. People are advised to give themselves so much time between things in order to make the full transition into the new schedule or time frame so they’re not feeling overwhelmed and stressed out since stress can play a huge thing in work related insomnia. The stress comes from having to make so many drastic changes too fast and at one time.

This is why people get burned out quickly and dealing with the physical things like indigestion and other things because they’re pushing themselves too hard and sometimes forcing themselves to do things that isn’t even normal and is considered unhealthy.

College students who are like this tending to gain or lose weight because of the stress they’re under to switch from one thing to another and not giving themselves a chance to really adjust fully to a schedule or lifestyle change. Even people who work as nurses and doctors occasionally go through this. Because hours are rather strange, and that can throw off the pattern your body has become custom to when to rise and retire and if you interfere with that, it can make you feel weird which can also affect appetite and mental focus and concentration which most people deal with the disorientation of switching things around too fast.

Small Things That Can Induce Huge Sleeping Troubles

Sleeping troubles such as tossing and turning at nighttime is surely no way of life, particularly if we have been doing it for quite a long time.  Missing a couple of nights sleep when you have something on your mind is not going to harm you but if you are coping with sleepless nights on a fixed basis, it can impact your entire life.

Not only do you miss out on the slumber that you demand but you tend live in a kind of a fog, unable to genuinely function as you should.  You may be surprised to find that there are a lot of little things that can cause big sleeping troubles such as this.

A lot of the small things that cause troubles such as this are the endocrine glands that are inside of our body.  Some of the primary glands that may impact our slumber include the pituitary, the thyroid and the pineal gland.  While these glands are only a few ounces in size apiece, they can be the driving factor for major sleeping  troubles if they get out of equilibrium.

Not only do they cause problems with sleeping, they can really interrupt on our total life.

The thyroid gland is responsible for  a great deal in the body that it is oftentimes believed to be the rudder that directs our bodies.  If we are dealing with hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, our sleep can be impacted negatively.

The pituitary gland is what governs the secretion of adrenaline into our body.  This can cause major problems with sleep for us because adrenaline will most definitely keep you awake.

If we tend to stress unnecessarily, it may be a problem with our pituitary gland.  Then again, unnecessary stress can also be caused by a vitamin deficiency.  This is a problem that is best left to your doctor to diagnose.

Finally, we have the pineal gland.  This is a small gland that is found in the brain and one of its major jobs is to release melatonin into your system.  Melatonin is a natural sleep hormone that is made by this gland and it assists to regulate our internal clock and help to maintain our circadian rhythm.  If we are having a difficulty with  sleeping, melatonin or more so the  lack of it may be to blame.  Either expand your endocrine levels naturally or engage in taking it as a supplement so you can  sleep more soundly.

Hidden Ingredients That Rob You of Sleep

You might be surprised to find out that there are things hiding everywhere which will harm your ability to fall asleep at night and to stay asleep until you need to wake up in the morning. This not only includes things that may be hiding in the food that you eat or the liquids that you drink, it may also be things that are hiding in the environment around us. Here are several different things that may be causing us to experience insomnia, many of which we may not even be aware of.

The most obvious of these would be chemicals that are hiding inside of the food that we eat. The type of food that we eat before we go to bed makes a lot of difference in how well we are going to be able to sleep at night. Although many of us may tend to eat ourselves into a coma in the evenings, this really is not a good thing for us to do. If we fill up on fast acting carbohydrates in the evenings, we are actually causing our pancreas to dump massive amounts of insulin into our bloodstream. This causes us to be lethargic and to fall asleep but eventually, it throws us into a tailspin that may cause insomnia.

Most of us are aware that caffeine is a stimulant but there may also be other stimulants that are in the food that we eat and the drinks that we drink. Sugar is a good example of this and although its effects may be somewhat short-lived, it is a stimulant nonetheless. Make sure that you are not eating or drinking in the sugar within a few hours of bedtime.

This will help to even out your body chemistry and allow you to get a good nights sleep if this is the cause of your insomnia. Finally, there may be some pollen that is hiding in your area or perhaps even on your body. Make sure that you shower before going to bed as this will help you to get a much better night’s sleep. You should also run a high quality air filter in your room to remove as much of the pollen as you possibly can. If the filter does happen to be a little bit noisy, it often simply turns into white noise so it will not keep you up at night.
